Turkey’s Caustic Soda Imports Plunge 49%, Dropping to $164 Million in 2023

In 2023, imports of caustic soda into Turkey fell markedly to 430K tons, which is down by -32.8% against the year before. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 640K tons in 2022, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, caustic soda imports reduced sharply to $164M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 252% against the previous year. Imports by Country

Egypt (114K tons), Russia (69K tons) and Romania (51K tons) were the main suppliers of caustic soda imports to Turkey, with a combined 54% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +11.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest caustic soda suppliers to Turkey were Egypt ($35M), France ($26M) and Russia ($22M), with a combined 51% share of total imports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +13.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

In 2023, caustic soda in aqueous solution (soda lye) (375K tons) constituted the largest type of caustic soda supplied to Turkey, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, caustic soda in aqueous solution (soda lye) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, caustic soda in the solid form (55K tons), sevenfold.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of caustic soda in aqueous solution (soda lye) imports was relatively modest.

In value terms, caustic soda in aqueous solution (soda lye) ($131M) constituted the largest type of caustic soda supplied to Turkey, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by caustic soda in the solid form ($33M), with a 20% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the caustic soda price stood at $382 per ton (CIF, Turkey), shrinking by -23.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 172%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $501 per ton, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,575 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($273 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+16.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
