Turkey's Cement Export Drops Significantly to $1.2 Billion in 2023

Turkey Cement Exports

In 2023, after eight years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of cement, when their volume decreased by -15.8% to 17M tons. Overall, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 20M tons in 2022, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, cement exports dropped to $1.2B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. Exports by Country

the United States (6.9M tons) was the main destination for cement exports from Turkey, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, cement exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Israel (3.3M tons), twofold. Syrian Arab Republic (929K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.5% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to +73.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (+17.8% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+4.9% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($475M) remains the key foreign market for cement exports from Turkey, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($208M), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Syrian Arab Republic, with a 5.3% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +67.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (+19.1% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+6.4% per year).

Exports by Type

Portland cement, other than white, whether or not artificially coloured (15M tons) was the largest type of cement exported from Turkey, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, portland cement, other than white, whether or not artificially coloured exceeded the volume of the second product type, portland cement, white, whether or not artificially coloured (1.6M tons), ninefold. Cement of hydraulic kinds (202K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of portland cement, other than white, whether or not artificially coloured exports stood at +5.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: portland cement, white, whether or not artificially coloured (+4.8% per year) and cement of hydraulic kinds (+6.0% per year).

In value terms, portland cement, other than white, whether or not artificially coloured ($965M) remains the largest type of cement exported from Turkey, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by portland cement, white, whether or not artificially coloured ($159M), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by aluminous cement ("ciment fondu"), whether or not coloured or in the form of clinkers, with a 1.3% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of portland cement, other than white, whether or not artificially coloured exports totaled +6.2%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: portland cement, white, whether or not artificially coloured (+5.4% per year) and aluminous cement ("ciment fondu"), whether or not coloured or in the form of clinkers (+7.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the cement price amounted to $69 per ton (FOB, Turkey), rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 an increase of 32%. The export price peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($111 per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($44 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Libya (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
