Turkey Cereal Flour Exports
In 2023, overseas shipments of cereal flours increased by 19% to 3.7M tons, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. In general, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +22.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, cereal flour exports dropped to $1.5B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +55.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.5B, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country
Iraq (1.3M tons) was the main destination for cereal flour exports from Turkey, accounting for a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, cereal flour exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Somalia (278K tons), fivefold. Syrian Arab Republic (273K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.4% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Iraq amounted to +2.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Somalia (+39.4% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+2.7% per year).
In value terms, Iraq ($552M) remains the key foreign market for cereal flours exports from Turkey, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Syrian Arab Republic ($100M), with a 6.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Somalia, with a 6.4% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to Iraq amounted to +1.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+1.4% per year) and Somalia (+29.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the cereal flour price amounted to $401 per ton (FOB, Turkey), declining by -17.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $485 per ton, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Venezuela ($449 per ton) and Iraq ($440 per ton), while the average price for exports to Somalia ($343 per ton) and Djibouti ($351 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
