Turkey Citrus Fruit Exports
In 2023, the amount of citrus fruits exported from Turkey rose markedly to 2M tons, picking up by 15% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 19%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 2M tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2023.
In value terms, citrus fruit exports surged to $1.1B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country
Russia (763K tons) was the main destination for citrus fruit exports from Turkey, with a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, citrus fruit exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iraq (359K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ukraine (165K tons), with an 8.4% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia amounted to +5.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (+2.5% per year) and Ukraine (-3.4% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($426M) remains the key foreign market for citrus fruits exports from Turkey, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iraq ($197M), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia stood at +3.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (+0.7% per year) and Ukraine (-4.3% per year).
Exports by Type
Tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas (972K tons), lemons and limes (659K tons) and oranges (215K tons) were the main products of citrus fruit exports from Turkey, with a combined 95% share of total exports. Grapefruits and citrus fruits not elsewhere classified lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.3%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by citrus fruits not elsewhere classified (with a CAGR of +41.0%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas ($583M), lemons and limes ($359M) and oranges ($115M) constituted the most exported types of citrus fruits from Turkey worldwide, together comprising 94% of total exports. Grapefruits and citrus fruits not elsewhere classified lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6%.
Among the main product categories, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified, with a CAGR of +37.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the citrus fruit price amounted to $576 per ton (FOB, Turkey), growing by 9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the average export price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $686 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($766 per ton), while the average price for exports to Syrian Arab Republic ($179 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
