Turkey Clay Exports
In 2023, overseas shipments of clays decreased by -22.3% to 2.1M tons for the first time since 2012, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by 86%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 2.7M tons, and then declined notably in the following year.
In value terms, clay exports fell modestly to $194M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when exports increased by 44%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $196M, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country
Italy (1.1M tons) was the main destination for clay exports from Turkey, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, clay exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (272K tons), fourfold. Germany (81K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy stood at +26.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+11.0% per year) and Germany (+4.6% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($33M), the Netherlands ($33M) and Spain ($16M) appeared to be the largest markets for clay exported from Turkey worldwide, with a combined 42% share of total exports. Germany, France, Algeria, India and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +90.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Bentonite (1.1M tons), kaolin and kaolinic clays (869K tons) and clays for construction and industrial use (110K tons) were the main products of clay exports from Turkey, together accounting for 100% of total exports. Fireclay lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 0.1%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for fireclay (with a CAGR of +34.4%), while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, bentonite ($163M) remains the largest type of clays exported from Turkey, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by kaolin and kaolinic clays ($22M), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by clays for construction and industrial use, with a 3.6% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of bentonite exports stood at +13.4%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: kaolin and kaolinic clays (+21.4% per year) and clays for construction and industrial use (+2.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the clay price amounted to $92 per ton (FOB, Turkey), with an increase of 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $110 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($227 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($31 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tunisia (+24.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
