The Average Price of Cotton Fabric in Turkey Is $3.5 per Square Meter

Turkey Cotton Fabric Export Price in July 2023

In July 2023, the cotton fabric price amounted to $3.5 per square meter (FOB, Turkey), leveling off at the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 an increase of 12% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $3.7 per square meter in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($7.5 per square meter), while the average price for exports to Iran ($1.8 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Turkey Cotton Fabric Export Prices by Type

As there is only one major exported type of cotton fabric, the average price level is determined by prices for woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 amounted to +0.2% per month.

Turkey Cotton Fabric Exports

Cotton fabric exports from Turkey shrank notably to 16M square meters in July 2023, reducing by -18.4% on June 2023 figures. In general, exports saw a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when exports increased by 34% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 26M square meters. From June 2023 to July 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cotton fabric exports shrank significantly to $55M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Overall, exports recorded a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2022 when exports increased by 30% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $90M. From October 2022 to July 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 (16M square meters) was the largest type of cotton fabric exported from Turkey, accounting for a approximately 100% share of total exports.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 totaled -1.5%.

In value terms, woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 ($26M), woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing not more than 200 g/m2 ($15M) and woven fabrics of cotton, containing less than 85% by weight of cotton, mixed mainly or solely with man-made fibres, weighing more than 200g/m2 ($8.6M) were the most exported types of woven fabrics of cotton from Turkey worldwide, with a combined 90% share of total exports. Woven fabrics of cotton, containing less than 85% by weight of cotton, mixed mainly or solely with man-made fibres, weighing not more than 200 g/m2 and other woven fabrics of cotton, n.e.s. in chapter 52 lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.8%.

Other woven fabrics of cotton, n.e.s. in chapter 52, with a CAGR of +1.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

Turkey Cotton Fabric Exports by Country

Tunisia (2.8M square meters), Egypt (2.4M square meters) and Italy (1.6M square meters) were the main destinations of cotton fabric exports from Turkey, with a combined 42% share of total exports. China, Iran, Morocco, Hong Kong, Russia, Germany, Spain, Serbia, the UK and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hong Kong (with a CAGR of +13.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for cotton fabric exported from Turkey were Italy ($7.9M), Tunisia ($6.8M) and Egypt ($4.8M), with a combined 35% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Morocco, Germany, China, Iran, Serbia, the UK, Bangladesh, Russia and Hong Kong, which together accounted for a further 31%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Hong Kong, with a CAGR of +6.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
