Turkey Enhances Ferrous Scrap Imports Amid Rising Steel Production

In a significant development for the Turkish steel industry, steel enterprises in Turkey increased their imports of ferrous scrap by 6.7% in 2024, reaching 20.09 million tons, compared to the previous year, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), as reported by Kallanish. This comes as Turkey also witnesses a notable increase in steel production, which grew by 9.4% to 36.89 million tons in 2024.

IndexBox platform's data reveals that the import value of ferrous waste and scrap of cast iron in Turkey surged to $11 million USD in 2024 from $9.4 million USD in 2023. Additionally, exports demonstrate a strong performance, with the highest export value recorded at $747,400 USD to India in 2023.

In December 2024 alone, Turkish metallurgists imported 1.85 million tons, marking an 11.1% rise compared to December 2023 and an impressive 25.5% increase over the prior month. Despite this growth, Turkey's rebar exports in 2024 reflected a slight dip of 1%, totaling 3.34 million tons.

The U.S. emerged as a pivotal supplier of ferrous scrap, contributing 4.53 million tons throughout 2024, followed by the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. However, the introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in 2026 by the European Union poses potential challenges. EUROFER's calls for restrictions on EU scrap exports might impact Turkey's scrap procurement strategy, raising concerns around sustainable development within the industry.

As Veysel Jajan, the Secretary General of the Turkish Steel Producers Association, emphasized, "Reducing scrap exports could harm the circular economy. We need to intensify the dialogue with the European Commission to prevent any unreasonable initiatives." This underscores the critical nature of ensuring efficient scrap flow for the industry's green transformation.
