In July 2023, purchases abroad of ferro-silicon decreased by -5.3% to 10K tons, falling for the second month in a row after three months of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 112% against the previous month.
In value terms, ferro-silicon imports dropped to $15M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Overall, imports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when imports increased by 102% m-o-m.

Imports by Country
Russia (5.4K tons), Iran (2.8K tons) and China (909 tons) were the main suppliers of ferro-silicon imports to Turkey, together comprising 89% of total imports.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Iran (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Russia ($7.3M) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-silicon to Turkey, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($3.2M), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with an 11% share.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Russia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Iran (+12.7% per month) and China (-20.4% per month).

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon amounted to -5.0%.
In value terms, ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon ($13M) constituted the largest type of ferro-silicon supplied to Turkey, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight 55% or less of silicon ($2.2M), with a 15% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In July 2023, the ferrosilicon price amounted to $1,514 per ton (CIF, Turkey), declining by -3.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 8.5% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $2,484 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Norway ($3,676 per ton), while the price for Iran ($1,151 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
