Turkish Imports of Folding Boxboard Decrease by 2% to $51M in September 2023

Turkey Folding Boxboard Imports

In September 2023, the amount of folding boxboard imported into Turkey totaled 49K tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 with an increase of 31% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 73K tons. From June 2023 to September 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, folding boxboard imports shrank to $51M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2023 with an increase of 30% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $79M. Imports by Country

China (18K tons), Sweden (9.8K tons) and Finland (6.5K tons) were the main suppliers of folding boxboard imports to Turkey, with a combined 70% share of total imports.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +8.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, China ($15M), Sweden ($10M) and Finland ($7.8M) constituted the largest folding boxboard suppliers to Turkey, with a combined 65% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +2.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Imports by Type

In September 2023, paper and paperboard; multi-ply, coated with kaolin or other inorganic substances only, for non-graphic purposes, n.e.c. in heading no. 4810, in rolls or sheets (31K tons) constituted the largest type of folding boxboard supplied to Turkey, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, paper and paperboard; multi-ply, coated with kaolin or other inorganic substances only, for non-graphic purposes, n.e.c. in heading no. 4810, in rolls or sheets exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, paper and paperboard; uncoated, weight more than 150g/m2 but less than 225 g/m2, in rolls or sheets, n.e.c. in heading no. 4805 (4.3K tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by kraft paper and paperboard, coated on one or both sides with kaolin or other inorganic substances, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size (excluding that for writing, printing or other graphic purposes; paper and paperboard bleached uniformly in the mass and containing > 95% chemically processed wood fibres by weight in relation to the total fibre content) (4.3K tons), with an 8.7% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of paper and paperboard; multi-ply, coated with kaolin or other inorganic substances only, for non-graphic purposes, n.e.c. in heading no. 4810, in rolls or sheets amounted to -1.4%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: paper and paperboard; uncoated, weight more than 150g/m2 but less than 225 g/m2, in rolls or sheets, n.e.c. in heading no. 4805 (+2.7% per month) and kraft paper and paperboard, coated on one or both sides with kaolin or other inorganic substances, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size (excluding that for writing, printing or other graphic purposes; paper and paperboard bleached uniformly in the mass and containing > 95% chemically processed wood fibres by weight in relation to the total fibre content) (-4.1% per month).

In value terms, paper and paperboard; multi-ply, coated with kaolin or other inorganic substances only, for non-graphic purposes, n.e.c. in heading no. 4810, in rolls or sheets ($25M) constituted the largest type of folding boxboard supplied to Turkey, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by paper and paperboard, surface-coloured, surface-decorated or printed, coated, impregnated or covered with artificial resins or plastics, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size (excluding bleached and weighing > 150 g/m², and adhesives) ($11M), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by paper and paperboard, surface-coloured, surface-decorated or printed, coated, impregnated or covered with artificial resins or plastics, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size, bleached and weighing > 150 g/m² , with a 10% share.

Import Prices by Country

In September 2023, the folding boxboard price amounted to $1,035 per ton (CIF, Turkey), falling by -2.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2023 when the average import price increased by 4.5% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,328 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($1,459 per ton), while the price for Serbia ($416 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
