Price of Turkey's Motor Vehicle Engines Skyrockets to $1,306 per Unit

Turkey Motor Vehicle Engine Import Price in March 2023

In March 2023, the motor vehicle engine price amounted to $1,306 per unit (CIF, Turkey), growing by 13% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 17% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,432 per unit in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to March 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($2,176 per unit), while the price for China ($239 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Turkey Motor Vehicle Engine Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc ($2,110 per unit), while the price for engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50cc ($194 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc (+2.8%), while the prices for the other products experienced a decline.

Turkey Motor Vehicle Engine Imports

In March 2023, the amount of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) imported into Turkey declined to 88K units, which is down by -5.9% against the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a slight increase from March 2022 to March 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on March 2023 figures, imports increased by +25.5% against January 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when imports increased by 33% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 114K units in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to March 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports expanded remarkably to $115M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the period from March 2022 to March 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when imports increased by 28% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 147M units in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to March 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

Engines (37K units), engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc (24K units) and engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50cc (15K units) were the main products of motor vehicle engine imports to Turkey, with a combined 86% share of total imports.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc (with a CAGR of +6.7%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, engines ($57M), engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc ($50M) and engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc ($4.6M) were the most imported types of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) in Turkey, together comprising 97% of total imports.

Turkey Motor Vehicle Engine Imports by Country

China (25K units), the UK (13K units) and Romania (13K units) were the main suppliers of motor vehicle engine imports to Turkey, together comprising 58% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, India, Italy and Poland, which together accounted for a further 38%.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest motor vehicle engine suppliers to Turkey were Romania ($26M), South Korea ($24M) and the UK ($18M), with a combined 59% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, South Korea, with a CAGR of +14.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
