In 2023, Turkey's Import of Packaging Materials Drastically Falls to $1.4 Billion

Turkey Packaging Materials Imports

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of packaging materials decreased by -19.2% to 1.5M tons in 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.9M tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, packaging materials imports dropped sharply to $1.4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 50%. Imports by Country

China (276K tons), Germany (187K tons) and Sweden (174K tons) were the main suppliers of packaging materials imports to Turkey, with a combined 42% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($270M), Sweden ($182M) and Germany ($178M) were the largest packaging materials suppliers to Turkey, together accounting for 44% of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +12.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Folding boxboard (657K tons), paperboard case materials (574K tons) and wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard (248K tons) were the main products of packaging materials imports to Turkey, with a combined 97% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard (with a CAGR of +4.4%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, packaging materials with the largest imports in Turkey were folding boxboard ($706M), paperboard case materials ($386M) and wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard ($296M), together comprising 98% of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the packaging materials price amounted to $936 per ton (CIF, Turkey), which is down by -19.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,164 per ton, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($1,192 per ton), while the price for Israel ($415 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
