Shelled Hazelnut Price in Turkey Increases Notably to $6,230 per Ton

Turkey Shelled Hazelnut Export Price in January 2023

In January 2023, the shelled hazelnut price amounted to $6,230 per ton (FOB, Turkey), picking up by 7% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to January 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 17% against the previous month. The export price peaked in January 2023.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In January 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to China ($6,550 per ton) and Italy ($6,392 per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($5,597 per ton) and Switzerland ($5,841 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Turkey Shelled Hazelnut Exports

In January 2023, overseas shipments of shelled hazelnuts decreased by -31.4% to 15K tons, falling for the second month in a row after four months of growth. Overall, exports showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 with an increase of 55% against the previous month.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports fell dramatically to $91M (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 with an increase of 68% against the previous month.

Turkey Shelled Hazelnut Exports by Country

Italy (4K tons), Germany (2.7K tons) and France (2K tons) were the main destinations of shelled hazelnut exports from Turkey, with a combined 60% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, Algeria, Russia and China, which together accounted for a further 27%.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +10.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($26M), Germany ($17M) and France ($13M) were the largest markets for shelled hazelnut exported from Turkey worldwide, together comprising 61% of total exports. Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, Russia, China and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +13.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
