Turkey Sodium Carbonate Exports
In 2023, overseas shipments of sodium carbonate decreased by -14.3% to 4.7M tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 137,901% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 5.5M tons in 2022, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, sodium carbonate exports declined to $1.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 61,831% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $1.4B in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country
Italy (372K tons), Spain (369K tons) and China (360K tons) were the main destinations of sodium carbonate exports from Turkey, together comprising 23% of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +266.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for sodium carbonate exported from Turkey were Italy ($117M), Spain ($116M) and Egypt ($92M), with a combined 25% share of total exports. Brazil, India, the Netherlands, China, the UK and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.
China, with a CAGR of +216.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the sodium carbonate price stood at $277 per ton (FOB, Turkey), picking up by 9.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the average export price increased by 60% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $487 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($334 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($199 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
