Turkey Stranded Wire Exports
In December 2023, approximately 13K tons of stranded wire, ropes and cables were exported from Turkey; declining by -9.5% against the month before. In general, exports saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 when exports increased by 14% m-o-m.
In value terms, stranded wire exports contracted to $52M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2023. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when exports increased by 16% m-o-m. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $94M. From April 2023 to December 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country
Iraq (1.5K tons) was the main destination for stranded wire exports from Turkey, with a 12% share of total exports. Moreover, stranded wire exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (715 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (624 tons), with a 4.8% share.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Iraq was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Italy (-5.5% per month) and the United States (-11.9% per month).
In value terms, the largest markets for stranded wire exported from Turkey were Italy ($5.5M), the UK ($4.4M) and Germany ($3.5M), with a combined 26% share of total exports.
the UK, with a CAGR of -1.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Exports by Type
Stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated (7.7K tons) was the largest type of stranded wire exported from Turkey, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated exceeded the volume of the second product type, copper stranded wire, cables and plaited bands (3.2K tons), twofold.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated totaled -1.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: copper stranded wire, cables and plaited bands (-2.7% per month) and aluminium; stranded wire, cables, plaited bands and the like, (not electrically insulated) (-5.8% per month).
In value terms, copper stranded wire, cables and plaited bands ($32M) remains the largest type of stranded wire exported from Turkey, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated ($12M), with a 24% share of total exports.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of copper stranded wire, cables and plaited bands amounted to -2.5%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated (-2.7% per month) and aluminium; stranded wire, cables, plaited bands and the like, (not electrically insulated) (-6.0% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In December 2023, the stranded wire price amounted to $3,997 per ton (FOB, Turkey), reducing by -4.3% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 16% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $5,368 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($7,802 per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($937 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
