Turkey's Truck Exports Fall to $4.8 Billion in 2023

In 2023, overseas shipments of trucks decreased by -7.3% to 201K units for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 250K units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, truck exports declined modestly to $4.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $5.4B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.Turkey Truck Exports By Country (Million USD)

Exports by Country

the UK (51K units), Slovenia (29K units) and Italy (25K units) were the main destinations of truck exports from Turkey, together comprising 52% of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovenia (with a CAGR of +8.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($1.2B), Slovenia ($665M) and Italy ($569M) appeared to be the largest markets for truck exported from Turkey worldwide, with a combined 51% share of total exports.

Slovenia, with a CAGR of +9.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes (192K units) was the largest type of trucks exported from Turkey, accounting for a 95% share of total exports. Moreover, diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes exceeded the volume of the second product type, spark-ignition trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes (8K units), more than tenfold. Diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. from 5 to 20 tonnes (913 units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.5% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes exports amounted to +2.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: spark-ignition trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes (+1.0% per year) and diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. from 5 to 20 tonnes (-0.2% per year).

In value terms, diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes ($4.5B) remains the largest type of trucks exported from Turkey, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by spark-ignition trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes ($199M), with a 4.1% share of total exports. It was followed by diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. from 5 to 20 tonnes, with a 1.7% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes exports totaled +2.5%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: spark-ignition trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes (+2.1% per year) and diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. from 5 to 20 tonnes (+5.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the truck price stood at $23,858 per unit (FOB, Turkey), rising by 5.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $25,014 per unit in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Denmark ($25,270 per unit) and Australia ($25,219 per unit), while the average price for exports to Morocco ($18,499 per unit) and Slovenia ($22,979 per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
