Significant Drop in Turkey's Wine Imports to $5.2M in September 2023

In September 2023, overseas purchases of wine decreased by -39.9% to 829K litres, falling for the second consecutive month after five months of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 83% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 1.6M litres in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wine imports reduced to $5.2M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when imports increased by 60% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 7.9M litres in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to September 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.Turkey Wine Imports By Country (Thousand USD)

Imports by Country

In September 2023, France (248K litres) constituted the largest wine supplier to Turkey, with a 30% share of total imports. Moreover, wine imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (107K litres), twofold. Spain (57K litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.9% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from France totaled +2.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (-2.7% per month) and Spain (+6.2% per month).

In value terms, France ($3M) constituted the largest supplier of wine to Turkey, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($564K), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 3.6% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from France totaled +5.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (-2.2% per month) and Spain (+3.9% per month).

Imports by Type

In September 2023, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) (720K litres) constituted the largest type of wine supplied to Turkey, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, sparkling wine (109K litres), sevenfold.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) stood at +4.2%.

In value terms, the most traded types of wine in Turkey were wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) ($2.8M) and sparkling wine ($2.4M).

Import Prices by Country

In September 2023, the wine price stood at $6.2 per litre (CIF, Turkey), picking up by 47% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $7.4 per litre in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($12.2 per litre), while the price for Moldova ($1.9 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
