Turkey's September 2023 Wool Export Plunges to $1.4M

In September 2023, after three months of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of wool, when their volume decreased by -20.9% to 1.1K tons. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% over the period from September 2022 to September 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2023 with an increase of 29% month-to-month.

In value terms, wool exports shrank remarkably to $1.4M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a modest increase from September 2022 to September 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, exports decreased by -27.6% against August 2023 indices. Exports by Country

India (527 tons), China (299 tons) and Poland (132 tons) were the main destinations of wool exports from Turkey, with a combined 84% share of total exports.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +4.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for wool exported from Turkey were India ($495K), China ($400K) and Poland ($212K), together comprising 82% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +3.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Wool; (not carded or combed), degreased, (not carbonised), shorn (632 tons) and wool; (not carded or combed), degreased, (not carbonised), (other than shorn) (507 tons) were the main products of wool exports from Turkey.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the biggest increases were in wool; (not carded or combed), degreased, (not carbonised), shorn (with a CAGR of +1.0%).

In value terms, the most traded types of wool in Turkey were wool; (not carded or combed), degreased, (not carbonised), shorn ($789K) and wool; (not carded or combed), degreased, (not carbonised), (other than shorn) ($566K).

In terms of the main product categories, wool; (not carded or combed), degreased, (not carbonised), shorn, with a CAGR of +2.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In September 2023, the wool price amounted to $1,189 per ton (FOB, Turkey), dropping by -8.5% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 11% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $1,365 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($1,906 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($940 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
