U.S. Banana Import Prices by Country
U.S. banana import price peaked at $494 in Apr 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future. Over the period from Jan 2021 to Apr 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +4.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Feb 2022 when the average import price increased by 1.6% m-o-m.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In Apr 2022, the countries with the highest prices were Colombia ($570 per ton) and Costa Rica ($517 per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($449 per ton) and Guatemala ($472 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2021 to Apr 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Costa Rica (+8.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports into the U.S.
After three months of growth, purchases abroad of bananas decreased by -12.3% to 375K tons in Apr 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the period from Jan 2021 to Apr 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Mar 2022 with an increase of 14% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 428K tons. From Apr 2022 to Apr 2022, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, banana imports dropped to $186M (IndexBox estimates) in Apr 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +5.5% from Jan 2021 to Apr 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 when imports increased by 16% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $209M. From Apr 2022 to Apr 2022, the growth imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In Apr 2022, Guatemala (162K tons) constituted the largest supplier of banana to the United States, accounting for a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, banana imports from Guatemala exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Costa Rica (50K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Honduras (48K tons), with a 13% share.
From Jan 2021 to Apr 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Guatemala amounted to +35.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (-37.4% per month) and Honduras (+156.7% per month).
In value terms, Guatemala ($76M) constituted the largest supplier of banana to the United States, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Costa Rica ($26M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Honduras, with a 13% share.
From Jan 2021 to Apr 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Guatemala amounted to +39.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (-32.3% per month) and Honduras (+176.4% per month).
