UAE and Vietnam Fortify Economic Ties with New Investment Agreement

In a strategic move to bolster economic relations, Abu Dhabi's ADQ and Vietnam's State Capital Investment Corporation (SCIC) have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore investment opportunities across critical sectors. This comes in the wake of a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) signed in 2024, marking Vietnam's first such accord with a Middle Eastern country. The new agreement establishes a framework for co-investing in sectors critical to Vietnam's economic strategy, including oil and gas, renewable energy, and agriculture. Vietnam, the third-largest economy in Southeast Asia behind Indonesia and Thailand, is projected to grow by 6.5% in 2025 and 2026, according to data from IndexBox. This anticipated growth underscores the region's expanding economic landscape.

Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, MD and group CEO of ADQ, emphasized the potential of Vietnam's rapidly growing economy. "This partnership aims to deepen bilateral ties between the UAE and Vietnam while also highlighting ADQ's commitment to investing in high-growth markets that align with our strategic investment priorities," he stated.

Trade between the UAE and Vietnam reached $4.7 billion in 2023, showcasing a 5.9% year-on-year increase. Notably, the first eight months of 2024 saw trade exceed $4.47 billion, marking a remarkable 45% surge compared to the previous year's corresponding period, further reinforcing the robust economic partnership between the two nations.

SCIC Chairman Nguyen Chi Thanh described the MoU as a "significant milestone." He expressed that SCIC is poised to facilitate conditions conducive to long-term collaboration, indicating plans to organize business forums aimed at exploring investment opportunities and developing joint investment mechanisms.

Founded in 2005, SCIC manages a diverse portfolio of over 110 state-owned enterprises, playing a pivotal role in enhancing the competitiveness and efficiency of state-backed companies while executing strategic investments for sustainable economic growth. Established in 2018, ADQ manages a global portfolio of over 25 companies spanning key sectors such as energy, utilities, transport, logistics, food, agriculture, healthcare, and life sciences.
