UAE's Remarkable Foreign Trade Growth in 2024: A Milestone Achievement

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced a landmark achievement in its foreign trade sector as it surpassed AED 3 trillion for the first time in 2024. This notable growth was confirmed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as reported by Gulf Business. While global trade grew by a modest 2 percent, the UAE's foreign trade expanded by an impressive 14.6 percent, significantly outpacing global averages.

According to the IndexBox platform, the UAE's non-oil foreign trade reached AED 2.997 trillion (USD 815.7 billion) by the end of 2024, marking a substantive 14.6 percent increase from the previous year. This surge is attributed to the strategic economic policies led by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, which have resulted in robust economic partnerships worldwide. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) played a crucial role, contributing AED 135 billion to the nation's non-oil trade, representing a 42 percent year-on-year increase.

Sheikh Mohammed expressed optimism, stating, "At this pace, we will reach our 2031 goal of AED 4 trillion in annual foreign trade years ahead of schedule." This remarkable achievement positions the UAE significantly ahead in its long-term trade objectives by reaching 75 percent of the target much earlier than projected.

Key Performance Indicators in UAE's Trade

One of the major contributors to this success was the rise in non-oil goods exports, which amounted to AED 561.2 billion in 2024, reflecting an increase of 27.6 percent compared to the previous year. Consequently, non-oil exports now make up 18.7 percent of the UAE's total foreign trade, up from 16.8 percent in 2023. This shift underscores the UAE's diversification strategy away from oil-dependent revenues.

The UAE also saw substantial growth in its trade relationships, with exports to its top ten global partners growing by 10 percent, while trade with other nations expanded by 19.2 percent in 2024. The leading export commodities included gold, jewellery, and petroleum-based oils, among others, which experienced a combined growth of 40.8 percent from the previous year.

Furthermore, the re-export sector saw a surge, reaching AED 734.4 billion in 2024, marking a 7.3 percent increase from 2023. The growth trajectory in imports also saw a 14.2 percent rise in non-oil imports, reaching AED 1.701 trillion, highlighting the nation's expanding economic engagement globally.

In conclusion, the UAE's forward-thinking trade strategies, bolstered by cohesive economic partnerships, have not only led to remarkable growth rates but also set a precedent for future success, asserting the nation's role as a leading player in global trade dynamics.
