UBS Plans $3 Billion Share Buyback Following Strong Earnings
UBS Group AG has unveiled plans to repurchase up to $3 billion worth of its own shares in 2025, marking a strategic move to return more capital to investors as it progresses with the integration of Credit Suisse. Bloomberg reported that CEO Sergio Ermotti aims to increase shareholder value amid impressive quarterly results.
The Zurich-based banking giant reported a net income of $770 million for the last quarter of 2024, significantly surpassing forecasts of $486 million. This performance was principally driven by a considerable success in their investment banking unit, which delivered a pre-tax profit approximately seven times above projections.
UBS has outlined its plan to execute a $1 billion share buyback in the first half of the year, followed by an additional $2 billion in the latter part, reflecting a step up from its activities in 2024. These plans, however, remain conditional on new Swiss banking regulations that are currently in the legislative process. In an encouraging move for investors, UBS has proposed a dividend of 90 cents per share, up from the previous year, with intentions to increase it by 10%.
The positive financial strategies indicate UBS's confidence in fully integrating Credit Suisse by next year and reinstating dividend distributions to levels seen before the acquisition. However, potential regulatory changes could increase capital demands, prompting Ermotti to caution against any regulatory "overreaction" that might undermine competitiveness.
While the quarter showcased strong financial results, UBS experienced challenges with lower-than-expected client inflows in its key wealth management division and an uptick in the cost-to-income ratio, rising to 89% from 83% in the previous period.
Looking ahead, UBS stated that investor sentiment had improved following the 2024 US presidential election, with "constructive" market conditions extending into the early months of 2025. Nevertheless, the bank warned of potential volatility due to global trade concerns, inflationary pressures, and central bank policy variations. The market turbulence bolstered trading and deal-making activities, generating $479 million in pre-tax earnings with a 37% revenue increase.
The wealth management unit recorded client inflows of $17.7 billion, which was below expectations, but UBS intends to achieve $100 billion in new assets annually through 2025, according to data from the IndexBox platform. Furthermore, the bank's efforts to downsize former Credit Suisse assets yielded a pre-tax loss of $900 million, modestly beating estimates of over $1 billion in losses.
In a bid to streamline operations, UBS initiated a wave of job cuts in Switzerland last month, affecting several hundred employees as part of its ongoing restructuring process.
