UK Garden Centres Face Price Hikes Due to Tax Increases

Garden centres in the UK are facing significant challenges as they prepare for potential price hikes in a variety of plants, a situation exacerbated by tax increases introduced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. According to a source, customers can expect to see rising costs in roses, bedding plants, and shrubs, with potential reductions in staff and opening hours.

Data from the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) indicates a 4% rise in the cost of hardy plants, shrubs, and trees as of December 2024. More notably, the price of bedding plants has surged by 17%, reflecting a challenging economic climate for the industry.

Impact on Roses and Related Imports

In 2024, the export value of live plants, including grafted or non-grafted roses, plummeted to USD 57.1K from USD 596.6K in 2023, according to data from the IndexBox platform. On the other hand, the UK's import of these plants reached USD 14.2M in 2024, up from USD 13.3M in 2023, highlighting a growing reliance on international supplies. The Netherlands remains the biggest contributor to these imports with USD 9.3M in 2024.

Financial and Operational Pressures

The HTA has expressed concern over the £25bn employer National Insurance increase and changes to inheritance tax affecting businesses. In a bid to cope, garden centres are adjusting operational strategies. Tam Woodhouse, of Millbrook Garden Company, anticipates a devastating 56% rise in their National Insurance bill.

Despite some assurances from the Treasury promising stability and no increment on pay slip taxes, Neil Grant, Managing Director of Ferndale Garden Centre, points out that these measures are straining smaller garden centres significantly, curbing their potential for growth and investment...

As of now, garden centres are left grappling with higher operational costs and slim margins, a factor that may greatly influence plant and flower pricing in the coming months.
