Ukrainian Railways Boost Iron and Steel Exports

In a remarkable display of strategic freight transportation, iron and steel commodities now constitute more than 45% of the total export freight transported by Ukrainian Railways, as detailed in a recent report. [source] Iron and manganese ore represented 39% of the freight, reaching 33 million tons, while ferrous metals occupied a 6% share with 5.2 million tons by the end of 2024. The overall export transportation volume reached 84.7 million tons, showcasing a substantial 51.2% year-on-year increase.

Data from the IndexBox platform highlights that the iron and steel sectors are substantial contributors to this freight surge, accounting for 24.7% of total port transshipment of export cargoes, which includes a predominant 20.7% in ore and 4% in ferrous metals. By the close of 2024, port exports of ore were tentatively estimated at 18.3 million tons, with ferrous metals contributing 3.5 million tons. Total export transshipment via Ukrainian ports was recorded at 88.1 million tons during this period.

The role of container rail transportation has also seen substantial growth, particularly regarding the shipment of ferrous metals, which make up 20% of this transport sector. The transport of steel products increased markedly by 42.3% year-on-year to 43 thousand TEU in 2023, although it experienced an 8.6% decline to 30.3 thousand TEU by the end of the year. Notably, iron and steel companies remain pivotal clients of Ukrainian Railways, following agrarian entities in container transportation volume.

However, the anticipated hike in freight tariffs by Ukrainian Railways, a proposed 37% indexing, casts a cautionary note on the future of export railroad transportation in 2025. Such an adjustment could translate to an additional logistics cost between UAH 8-10 billion, particularly impacting iron and steel enterprises.
