According to Bloomberg, this expansion includes 9.5% direct ownership and an additional 18.5% via derivatives.

The move underscores Orcel's ongoing ambition to potentially acquire Commerzbank, despite facing resistance from the German government, which holds a 12% stake in the bank. UniCredit's recent enhancements in its stake, which have grown from around 21%, utilize instruments like total return swaps, allowing control over voting rights without exceeding regulatory thresholds that require formal permissions from the European Central Bank.

Interestingly, this development coincides with Orcel's domestic aspirations to create Italy's largest bank through an unsolicited takeover bid for Banco BPM SpA.
