UK Crude Oil Price Reduces 3%, Averaging $662 per Ton After Two Consecutive Months of Decline

United Kingdom Crude Oil Import Price in January 2023

In January 2023, the crude oil price stood at $662 per ton (CIF, United Kingdom), falling by -3.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 an increase of 20% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $895 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to January 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from the United States ($705 per ton) and Algeria ($700 per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($558 per ton) and Guyana ($591 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

United Kingdom Crude Oil Imports

In January 2023, supplies from abroad of crude petroleum oil increased by 17% to 5.6M tons, rising for the second consecutive month after three months of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 with an increase of 29% m-o-m.

In value terms, crude oil imports rose notably to $3.7B (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 34% m-o-m.

United Kingdom Crude Oil Imports by Country

Norway (2.5M tons), the United States (2.1M tons) and Algeria (306K tons) were the main suppliers of crude oil imports to the UK, with a combined 88% share of total imports. Canada, Ghana, Guyana and Kazakhstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Guyana (with a CAGR of +5.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest crude oil suppliers to the UK were Norway ($1.5B), the United States ($1.5B) and Algeria ($214M), together accounting for 88% of total imports. Canada, Ghana, Guyana and Kazakhstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Canada, with a CAGR of +4.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
