United Kingdom MDF Imports
In October 2023, purchases abroad of MDF decreased by -9.3% to 39M cubic meters, falling for the fourth month in a row after two months of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 with an increase of 32% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 53M cubic meters in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to October 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, MDF imports declined to $34M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 with an increase of 27% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 45M cubic meters in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to October 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country
In October 2023, Ireland (15M cubic meters) constituted the largest MDF supplier to the UK, accounting for a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, MDF imports from Ireland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (6.8M cubic meters), twofold. Spain (4M cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Ireland was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (-3.0% per month) and Spain (+0.7% per month).
In value terms, Ireland ($13M), Germany ($6.9M) and Spain ($3.9M) constituted the largest MDF suppliers to the UK, together comprising 72% of total imports. Belgium, Portugal, Brazil and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +1.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
In October 2023, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm (28M cubic meters) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to the UK, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (7.8M cubic meters), fourfold.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm was relatively modest. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (-0.4% per month) and medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness under 5 mm (-3.1% per month).
In value terms, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm ($22M) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to the UK, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm ($8M), with a 24% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In October 2023, the mdf price amounted to $865 per thousand cubic meters (CIF, United Kingdom), remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 an increase of 5.4% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $921 per thousand cubic meters in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to October 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Poland ($1.0 per cubic meter), while the price for Brazil ($366 per thousand cubic meters) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
