UK Sees Slight Decline in Particle Board Imports, Reaching $378 Million in 2023

United Kingdom Particle Board Imports

Particle board imports into the UK soared to 1.1M cubic meters in 2023, jumping by 20% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -14.0% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.2M cubic meters. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, particle board imports declined to $378M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -16.4% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 77%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $452M. Imports by Country

Germany (240K cubic meters), Ireland (165K cubic meters) and France (154K cubic meters) were the main suppliers of particle board imports to the UK, with a combined 52% share of total imports. Belgium, Latvia, Portugal, Luxembourg and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +39.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest particle board suppliers to the UK were Germany ($75M), Ireland ($56M) and France ($54M), together comprising 49% of total imports. Belgium, Latvia, Portugal, Luxembourg and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

Among the main suppliers, Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +38.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Waferboards (525K cubic meters), oriented strandboard (OSB) (405K cubic meters) and particle board and similar board of ligneous materials (excluding wood) (134K cubic meters) were the main products of particle board imports to the UK, together accounting for 100% of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by oriented strandboard (OSB) (with a CAGR of +10.7%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, particle board with the largest imports in the UK were waferboards ($198M), oriented strandboard (OSB) ($130M) and particle board and similar board of ligneous materials (excluding wood) ($49M), together comprising 100% of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the particle board price amounted to $354 per cubic meter (CIF, United Kingdom), shrinking by -23.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $463 per cubic meter in 2022, and then declined significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($731 per cubic meter), while the price for Luxembourg ($283 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
