UK's Soft Drink Imports Surge Dramatically to $2 Billion in 2023

In 2023, soft drink imports into the UK dropped rapidly to 1.4B litres, which is down by -26.9% on the year before. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +19.9% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.9B litres, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, soft drink imports rose markedly to $2B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +85.8% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Imports by Country

France (291M litres), the Netherlands (252M litres) and Germany (192M litres) were the main suppliers of soft drink imports to the UK, together comprising 52% of total imports. Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +110.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest soft drink suppliers to the UK were the Netherlands ($437M), Germany ($310M) and France ($268M), with a combined 50% share of total imports. Ireland, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Switzerland, with a CAGR of +91.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk (753M litres) and sugary soft drinks (687M litres) were the main products of soft drink imports to the UK.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk (with a CAGR of +7.4%).

In value terms, soft drinks with the largest imports in the UK were non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk ($1.2B) and sugary soft drinks ($819M).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the soft drink price stood at $1.4 per litre (CIF, United Kingdom), rising by 45% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($3 per litre), while the price for the Czech Republic ($0.7 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
