In January 2023, the synthetic filament tow price stood at $1,754 per ton (CIF, United Kingdom), rising by 3.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 11% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,405 per ton. From August 2022 to January 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($6,344 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($1,070 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

United Kingdom Synthetic Filament Tow Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In January 2023, the product with the highest price was synthetic filament tow ($4,056 per ton), while the price for synthetic staple fibres, not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning totaled $1,663 per ton.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by synthetic staple fibres, not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning (-0.7%).
United Kingdom Synthetic Filament Tow Imports
In January 2023, after two months of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of synthetic filament tow and staple fibers, not carded or combed, when their volume increased by 9.6% to 12K tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 with an increase of 48% against the previous month.
In value terms, synthetic filament tow imports rose notably to $20M (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 with an increase of 24% m-o-m.
United Kingdom Synthetic Filament Tow Imports by Type
In January 2023, synthetic staple fibres, not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning (11K tons) was the main type of synthetic filament tow supplied to the UK, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. Moreover, synthetic staple fibres, not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, synthetic filament tow (440 tons), more than tenfold.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of synthetic staple fibres, not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning totaled -1.6%.
In value terms, synthetic staple fibres, not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning ($18M) constituted the largest type of synthetic filament tow supplied to the UK, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by synthetic filament tow ($1.8M), with an 8.8% share of total imports.
United Kingdom Synthetic Filament Tow Imports by Country
South Korea (2.3K tons), Ireland (1.8K tons) and Vietnam (1.6K tons) were the main suppliers of synthetic filament tow imports to the UK, with a combined 50% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese), China, Germany, Japan, the United States, Belgium, India, South Africa and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 45%.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +12.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ireland ($3.6M), South Korea ($2.9M) and Vietnam ($1.8M) were the largest synthetic filament tow suppliers to the UK, with a combined 41% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese), the United States, Japan, Germany, China, Belgium, Portugal, India and South Africa, which together accounted for a further 53%.
South Africa, with a CAGR of +9.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
