United Kingdom Synthetic Yarn Import Price in June 2023
In June 2023, the synthetic yarn price stood at $8,289 per ton (CIF, United Kingdom), waning by -1.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 an increase of 26% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $9,524 per ton. From September 2022 to June 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($33,483 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($2,686 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

United Kingdom Synthetic Yarn Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In June 2023, the product with the highest price was yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale ($8,648 per ton), while the price for yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($5,556 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (+0.7%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
United Kingdom Synthetic Yarn Imports
In June 2023, overseas purchases of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers decreased by -17.9% to 920 tons for the first time since December 2022, thus ending a five-month rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2022 with an increase of 51% month-to-month.
In value terms, synthetic yarn imports reduced remarkably to $7.6M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 with an increase of 41% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of $9.5M. From December 2022 to June 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
United Kingdom Synthetic Yarn Imports by Type
Yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (542 tons), yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale (313 tons) and yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (65 tons) were the main products of synthetic yarn imports to the UK.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale (with a CAGR of +2.9%), while imports for the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, the most traded types of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers in the UK were yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($4.6M), yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale ($2.7M) and yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($360K).
United Kingdom Synthetic Yarn Imports by Country
In June 2023, Turkey (530 tons) constituted the largest synthetic yarn supplier to the UK, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, synthetic yarn imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (96 tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (87 tons), with a 9.4% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Turkey stood at +2.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-6.5% per month) and China (+2.0% per month).
In value terms, Turkey ($3.9M) constituted the largest supplier of synthetic yarn to the UK, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($1.5M), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 5.7% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey stood at +2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (+4.6% per month) and China (+1.6% per month).
