In May 2023, the amount of trucks imported into the UK skyrocketed to 24K units, growing by 47% on April 2023 figures. In general, total imports indicated a slight increase from May 2022 to May 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, imports increased by +46.8% against April 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 with an increase of 70% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in May 2023.
In value terms, truck imports skyrocketed to $1B (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated mild growth from May 2022 to May 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, imports increased by +46.8% against April 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 with an increase of 64% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in May 2023.

Imports by Country
Turkey (6K units), France (5.6K units) and Germany (3.6K units) were the main suppliers of truck imports to the UK, together accounting for 62% of total imports.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +8.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest truck suppliers to the UK were Turkey ($290M), France ($204M) and Germany ($167M), with a combined 64% share of total imports.
France, with a CAGR of +6.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
In May 2023, diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes (24K units) was the main type of truck supplied to the UK, with a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. from 5 to 20 tonnes (401 units), with a 1.6% share of total imports. Diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. over 20 tonnes (179 units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.7% share.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes stood at +2.0%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. from 5 to 20 tonnes (+1.3% per month) and diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. over 20 tonnes (-6.0% per month).
In value terms, diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. under 5 tonnes ($895M) constituted the largest type of truck supplied to the UK, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. over 20 tonnes ($63M), with a 6.1% share of total imports. It was followed by diesel or semi-diesel trucks of a g.v.w. from 5 to 20 tonnes, with a 5.1% share.
Import Prices by Country
In May 2023, the truck price stood at $42,590 per unit, therefore (CIF, United Kingdom), remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 9.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $43,774 per unit in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Japan ($49,670 per unit) and Turkey ($48,108 per unit), while the price for France ($36,496 per unit) and Spain ($37,172 per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
