UPS to Cut Amazon Delivery Volumes by Half in Strategic Shift

UPS announced plans to reduce its delivery volumes for e-commerce behemoth Amazon by 50% in the latter half of 2026. This strategic decision, as reported by Yahoo Finance, is aimed at enhancing profitability for the parcel carrier.

Amazon, which comprised 11.8% of UPS's revenue in 2024, is its largest customer yet contributes less to profit margins. "Amazon is our largest customer but not our most profitable," stated CEO Carol Tome. The announcement prompted a notable drop in UPS stock, plummeting 15% by midday.

In alignment with this move, UPS revealed the "efficiency reimagined" initiative, targeting $1 billion in cost reductions, including workforce cuts and facility closures across its logistics network. This comes as the company posted its fourth-quarter revenue figures at $25.3 billion, marking a 1.6% year-over-year increase.

Nonetheless, UPS's fourth-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $2.75 exceeded analyst expectations, which had predicted EPS of $2.53, despite falling short of the anticipated revenue of $25.419 billion. The company's U.S domestic segment saw a 2.2% year-over-year revenue growth to $17.3 billion, buoyed by a notable rise in air cargo volumes.

Globally, UPS's international segment revenue rose by 6.9% to $4.9 billion, with a marked 11.7% surge in average daily export volumes. Impressively, Asia exports soared by 15.4%, continuing an upward trajectory for a third consecutive quarter.

Looking ahead to 2025, UPS projects a decrease in total revenue to $89 billion, reflecting a 2.3% drop from 2024. The firm anticipates capital expenditures of approximately $3.5 billion and dividend payments pending board approval at $5.5 billion.

Amid these shifts, UPS is preparing for potential transformation in global trade dynamics. "The world is changing, and the rate of change is accelerating," Tome remarked, pointing to possible implications of generative AI and shifts in trade policies and lanes. With ongoing expansion in Asia, UPS is set to enhance its Hong Kong air hub and construct a new facility in the Philippines, thus fortifying its presence in vital trade lanes.
