U.S. Aluminum Insulated Wire Imports
In 2023, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of aluminum insulated wire and cable, when their volume decreased by -5.5% to 751K tons. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +45.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 795K tons in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, aluminum insulated wire imports dropped to $3.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $3.8B in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, Canada (284K tons) constituted the largest supplier of aluminum insulated wire to the United States, with a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, aluminum insulated wire imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (127K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mexico (82K tons), with an 11% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+50.3% per year) and Mexico (+7.8% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($1.2B) constituted the largest supplier of aluminum insulated wire and cable to the United States, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($434M), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 13% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada amounted to +3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+11.8% per year) and India (+46.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the aluminum insulated wire price stood at $4,370 per ton (CIF, US), dropping by -8.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $4,799 per ton in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($5,419 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($2,876 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
