U.S. Animal Food Exports
In February 2023, approximately 118K tons of animal food (except dog and cat) were exported from the United States; remaining constant against the previous month. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when exports increased by 9.5% m-o-m. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 149K tons. From September 2022 to February 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, animal food exports rose rapidly to $153M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 36% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $226M. From June 2022 to February 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
China (22K tons), South Korea (22K tons) and Canada (11K tons) were the main destinations of animal food exports from the United States, together comprising 47% of total exports. Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($25M), China ($24M) and Mexico ($16M) appeared to be the largest markets for animal food exported from the United States worldwide, with a combined 42% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Japan, South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 29%.
Trinidad and Tobago, with a CAGR of +8.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In February 2023, the animal food price stood at $1,296 per ton (FOB, US), increasing by 9.6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when the average export price increased by 25% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,569 per ton. From June 2022 to February 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($2,854 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($338 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
