U.S. Apparel Accessory Imports

In February 2023, after two months of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of apparel accessories and other apparel, when their volume decreased by -19.8% to 19K tons. In general, imports saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 with an increase of 19% against the previous month.

In value terms, apparel accessory imports shrank markedly to $379M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 20% month-to-month.

Imports by Country

In February 2023, China (11K tons) constituted the largest supplier of apparel accessory to the United States, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, apparel accessory imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bangladesh (1.8K tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Vietnam (1.4K tons), with a 7.2% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Bangladesh (+2.1% per month) and Vietnam (-0.8% per month).

In value terms, China ($147M) constituted the largest supplier of apparel accessory to the United States, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($43M), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 9.4% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from China amounted to -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (+5.1% per month) and Bangladesh (+2.8% per month).

Import Prices by Country

In February 2023, the apparel accessory price stood at $20,034 per ton (CIF, US), with an increase of 2.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when the average import price increased by 9.6% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $21,619 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to February 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($54,020 per ton), while the price for China ($13,475 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
