U.S. Auto Sales Surge in November with Increased Discounts

New vehicle sales in the United States are expected to have climbed by 6.7% in November compared to the same period last year. This rise is largely fueled by substantial discounts aimed at reducing elevated inventory levels, according to a report from industry consultants J.D. Power and GlobalData.

Despite ongoing challenges such as persistent inflation and high interest rates cutting into demand, more competitive pricing has been a boon for some automakers, leading to a notable increase in sales volumes. The seasonally adjusted annualized rate for new-vehicle sales is anticipated to increase by 1.2 million units, reaching 16.5 million units in November, compared to the previous year.

Furthermore, retail inventory is forecasted to rise significantly by 29.7% to 2.1 million units. These developments coincide with the passenger car import values recorded through 2024, which reveal a notable high in April at $19.3 billion and fluctuations across the year—from $17.1 billion in January to $17.5 billion in August—according to IndexBox data.

However, the total retailer profit per unit is expected to decline by 21.2%, indicating moderation in transaction prices and profitability as remarked by Thomas King, president of the data and analytics division at J.D. Power. Despite these financial challenges, the fundamental strength of the new-vehicle market remains robust, a sentiment echoed by Jeff Schuster of GlobalData, who also noted the easing concern over vehicle demand in the final quarter of the year.
