China (1.6M tons), Mexico (891K tons) and Canada (459K tons) were the main destinations of bleached sulphate pulp exports from the United States, together comprising 48% of total exports. Japan, India, Turkey, Indonesia and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

In value terms, wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of coniferous wood ($4.7B) remains the largest type of bleached sulphate pulp exported from the United States, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of non-coniferous wood ($478M), with a 9.2% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of coniferous wood exports stood at +2.8%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the bleached sulphate pulp price stood at $840 per ton (FOB, US), dropping by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, bleached sulphate pulp export price increased by +38.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 56%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,032 per ton. From 2017 to 2023, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,178 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($684 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
