U.S. Bottled Water Imports
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of bottled waters decreased by -13.7% to 1.3B litres in 2023. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 1.6B litres in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, bottled water imports expanded significantly to $886M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +36.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country
Fiji (417M litres), Italy (382M litres) and France (229M litres) were the main suppliers of bottled water imports to the United States, with a combined 76% share of total imports. Mexico, Iceland, Canada and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Iceland (with a CAGR of +16.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest bottled water suppliers to the United States were Italy ($310M), France ($182M) and Fiji ($150M), together comprising 72% of total imports. Mexico, Iceland, Canada and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Mexico, with a CAGR of +21.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
Mineral or aerated waters (815M litres) and non-mineral or non-aerated waters (530M litres) were the main products of bottled water imports to the United States.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for non-mineral or non-aerated waters (with a CAGR of +7.1%).
In value terms, mineral or aerated waters ($662M) constituted the largest type of bottled waters supplied to the United States, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by non-mineral or non-aerated waters ($224M), with a 25% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the bottled water price amounted to $659 per thousand litres (CIF, US), surging by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 27%. The import price peaked at $677 per thousand litres in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($1.5 per litre), while the price for Fiji ($360 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+15.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
