U.S. Bread and Bakery Imports
In July 2023, approximately 208K tons of bread and bakery were imported into the United States; increasing by 7.7% against the previous month. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 with an increase of 18% month-to-month.
In value terms, bread and bakery imports expanded rapidly to $877M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% from July 2022 to July 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when imports increased by 19% m-o-m.

Imports by Country
Mexico (77K tons), Canada (76K tons) and Italy (6.2K tons) were the main suppliers of bread and bakery imports to the United States, together accounting for 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by India and France, which together accounted for a further 4.2%.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the biggest increases were in India (with a CAGR of +1.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest bread and bakery suppliers to the United States were Canada ($386M), Mexico ($206M) and Italy ($42M), with a combined 72% share of total imports.
Italy, with a CAGR of +2.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
Fresh bread and miscellaneous bakery (129K tons), gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles (76K tons) and crispbread, rusks and toasted bread (3.4K tons) were the main products of bread and bakery imports to the United States.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by crispbread, rusk and toasted bread (with a CAGR of +0.6%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, fresh bread and miscellaneous bakery ($576M) constituted the largest type of bread and bakery supplied to the United States, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles ($282M), with a 32% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In July 2023, the bread and bakery price stood at $4,218 per ton (CIF, US), rising by 6.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $4,304 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($6,807 per ton), while the price for China ($2,326 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
