U.S. Breakfast Cereal Imports
Breakfast cereal imports into the United States shrank to 15K tons in February 2023, dropping by -14.3% against January 2023 figures. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 28% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 19K tons. From April 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, breakfast cereal imports contracted to $73M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1% over the period from February 2022 to February 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 29% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $82M. From April 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In February 2023, Canada (7.1K tons) constituted the largest supplier of breakfast cereal to the United States, with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, breakfast cereal imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (2.1K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mexico (1.4K tons), with a 9.4% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (+4.2% per month) and Mexico (-1.8% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($33M), Mexico ($20M) and South Korea ($6M) were the largest breakfast cereal suppliers to the United States, together comprising 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Thailand, India, Italy, France, the UK and Chile, which together accounted for a further 11%.
Among the main suppliers, Chile, with a CAGR of +17.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In February 2023, the breakfast cereal price stood at $4,812 per ton (CIF, US), growing by 9.3% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw modest growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($14,216 per ton), while the price for Chile ($798 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
