Cheese and curd exports from the United States dropped to 37K tons in April 2023, waning by -12% on the previous month's figure. In general, exports saw a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when exports increased by 26% month-to-month.
In value terms, cheese and curd exports shrank to $191M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when exports increased by 23% month-to-month.

Exports by Country
Mexico (11K tons) was the main destination for cheese and curd exports from the United States, accounting for a 31% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese and curd exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (3.9K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Korea (3.6K tons), with a 9.8% share.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Mexico was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Japan (-2.4% per month) and South Korea (-6.4% per month).
In value terms, Mexico ($59M) remains the key foreign market for cheese and curd exports from the United States, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($20M), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 9.8% share.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to Mexico totaled +1.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Japan (-1.2% per month) and South Korea (-5.0% per month).
Exports by Type
Cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (14K tons), cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (12K tons) and fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd (8.8K tons) were the main products of cheese and curd exports from the United States, together accounting for 94% of total exports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the most traded types of cheese and curd in the United States were cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed ($74M), cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered ($59M) and fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd ($46M), together comprising 94% of total exports.
Among the main product categories, cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered, with a CAGR of +2.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In April 2023, the cheese and curd price amounted to $5,208 per ton (FOB, US), approximately equating the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when the average export price increased by 5.8% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $5,370 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to April 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In April 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Taiwan (Chinese) ($6,115 per ton) and China ($5,794 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($4,229 per ton) and Australia ($4,472 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
