U.S. Commercial Printing Imports
Commercial printing imports into the United States expanded significantly to 62K tons in March 2023, with an increase of 7.5% compared with the month before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 24% m-o-m.
In value terms, commercial printing imports amounted to $424M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 with an increase of 8.2% m-o-m.

Imports by Country
In March 2023, China (23K tons) constituted the largest commercial printing supplier to the United States, with a 36% share of total imports. Moreover, commercial printing imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (9.4K tons), twofold. Mexico (7.8K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China totaled -4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Canada (-1.6% per month) and Mexico (-1.4% per month).
In value terms, China ($102M), Canada ($80M) and Mexico ($49M) were the largest commercial printing suppliers to the United States, with a combined 55% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the UK, Italy, Vietnam, Japan and India, which together accounted for a further 26%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +2.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
Books, brochures, leaflets and similar printed matter (20K tons), registers, account books, order books and receipt books (12K tons) and paper binders, folders and file covers (6K tons) were the main products of commercial printing imports to the United States, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Printed matter of other kinds, printed picture, design and photograph n.e.s. , trade advertising materials and commercial catalogues, self-adhesive printed labels, printed or illustrated postcards and printed cards, playing cards, calendars and calendar blocks, printed matter in single sheets, whether or not folded, newspapers, journals and periodicals appearing less frequently than four times a week, transfers (decalcomanias), other than vitrifiable, blotting pads and book covers, rolls, sheets and dials, printed for self-recording apparatus, in rolls, in rectangular sheets, or cut into dials, albums for samples, collections, stamps or photographs, manifold business forms and interleaved carbon sets, vitrifiable transfers (decalcomanias), stamps; stamp-impressed paper; cheque forms; banknotes, stock, share or bond certificates and the like, music, printed or in manuscript, whether or not bound or illustrated and newspapers, journals and periodicals, appearing at least four times a week lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the biggest increases were in newspapers, journals and periodicals, appearing at least four times a week (with a CAGR of +4.0%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, books, brochures, leaflets and similar printed matter ($153M) constituted the largest type of commercial printing supplied to the United States, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by printed matter of other kinds ($59M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by registers, account books, order books and receipt books, with a 10% share.
Import Prices by Country
In March 2023, the commercial printing price stood at $6,782 per ton (CIF, US), waning by -3.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 an increase of 9.6% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $7,069 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to March 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($17,020 per ton), while the price for India ($2,907 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
