US Consumer Borrowing Surges in October, Exceeding Forecasts

In a surprising turn of events, US consumer borrowing witnessed a sharp rise in October, outpacing forecasts significantly as reported by Bloomberg. The Federal Reserve's data revealed that total credit outstanding soared by $19.2 billion, marking the most substantial uptick in credit card balances since mid-2022.

This increase reflects a surge in revolving debt outstanding, which includes credit card debt, by $15.7 billion. Key events like Amazon.com Inc.'s Prime Day alongside promotions at Walmart Inc. and Target Corp. contributed to this growth. Meanwhile, non-revolving credit such as vehicle and education loans saw a modest rise of $3.5 billion. Interestingly, auto sales hit their strongest pace in over three years during this period, according to Wards Automotive Group data.

Despite the Federal Reserve's move to lower its benchmark rate by 0.75 percentage points since September, the expected reduction in financing costs for consumers is anticipated to take some time. While higher incomes have allowed many to handle the heightened borrowing costs, lower-income citizens are experiencing increased financial pressure. Fed Chair Jerome Powell recently acknowledged that while overall US economic data is robust, financial stress persists within lower-income brackets.

The delinquency rates are symptomatic of these financial strains. A report by the New York Fed in November indicated that 3.5% of all outstanding consumer debt was in some form of delinquency in the third quarter, a rise from 3.2% in the preceding quarter. Alarmingly, serious delinquencies in auto loans, where payments are overdue by 90 days or more, rose to 2.9%.
