U.S. Consumer Sentiment Falls to Seven-Month Low Amid Rising Inflation Concerns

In February, U.S. consumer sentiment unexpectedly fell to its lowest point in seven months, driven by escalating concerns over inflation and the economic impact of potential tariffs. According to Reuters, the University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 67.8, down from January's final reading of 71.1, defying economists' expectations.

Households are now forecasting a significant increase in inflation over the coming year, with expectations surging to 4.3%, marking the highest anticipated inflation rate since November 2023. This is a notable rise from the 3.3% projected last month. Looking even further ahead, over the next five years, inflation is expected to run at 3.3%, a peak last seen in June 2008.
