U.S. Cotton Fabric Imports
In April 2023, cotton fabric imports into the United States shrank to 11M square meters, which is down by -9.7% on the previous month's figure. In general, imports recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when imports increased by 49% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 24M square meters in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to April 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cotton fabric imports rose significantly to $50M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Overall, imports saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 13% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 73M square meters in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to April 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country
In April 2023, India (4M square meters) constituted the largest cotton fabric supplier to the United States, with a 36% share of total imports. Moreover, cotton fabric imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (1.9M square meters), twofold. Pakistan (1.8M square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from India amounted to -3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-5.0% per month) and Pakistan (-11.8% per month).
In value terms, Pakistan ($12M), India ($6.4M) and Indonesia ($3.5M) were the largest cotton fabric suppliers to the United States, with a combined 45% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, China, Mexico and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 21%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +0.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 (with a CAGR of -4.9%), while purchases for the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing not more than 200 g/m2 ($32M) constituted the largest type of cotton fabric supplied to the United States, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 ($10M), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by woven fabrics of cotton, containing less than 85% by weight of cotton, mixed mainly or solely with man-made fibres, weighing not more than 200 g/m2, with a 7.4% share.
Import Prices by Country
In April 2023, the cotton fabric price stood at $4.4 per square meter (CIF, US), jumping by 17% against the previous month. Over the period from April 2022 to April 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 34% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $4.4 per square meter in December 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to April 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($15.5 per square meter), while the price for India ($1.6 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
