US Dealmaking on the Rise as KKR Sees Business-Friendly Environment

KKR & Co.'s co-head of global private equity, Pete Stavros, has reported a significant uptick in dealmaking activity in the United States, as the Trump administration is expected to foster a more business-friendly regulatory atmosphere. According to Stavros, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the firm is particularly active in sectors such as industrials, health care, and technology, and is eyeing opportunities for take-private transactions and carveouts.

The US has seen an impressive start to the year 2025, with Bloomberg data indicating around $100 billion worth of mergers and acquisitions announced. Notable deals include Constellation Energy Corp.'s agreement to acquire Calpine Corp. for approximately $16 billion and Johnson & Johnson's $14.6 billion acquisition of Intra-Cellular Therapies Inc.

Recently, KKR announced its decision to purchase a minority stake in American Electric Power Co.'s transmission business alongside Canada's PSP Investments for $2.8 billion. In a notable deal last year, T-Mobile US Inc. collaborated with KKR, investing $4.9 billion in a joint venture to acquire fiber-optic internet service provider Metronet.

While the US market appears robust, European dealmaking seems more subdued due to slower economic growth and political uncertainties. However, Stavros expressed confidence in eventual growth in the region. Back in the US, possible tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China remain a topic of concern among business leaders at Davos, despite the overall positive outlook.
