Import of Cooking or Heating Appliances in the US Rises Modestly to $199M in September 2023

U.S. Domestic, Non-Electric, Cooking Or Heating Appliance Imports

In September 2023, imports of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances into the United States declined slightly to 1.9M units, which is down by -4.9% compared with the month before. In general, total imports indicated measured growth from September 2022 to September 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, imports decreased by -4.5% against June 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 with an increase of 33% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at 2.3M units in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to September 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances rose notably to $199M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable increase from September 2022 to September 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, imports decreased by -31.7% against April 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when imports increased by 29% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $292M. Imports by Country

In September 2023, China (1.7M units) constituted the largest supplier of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliance to the United States, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (158K units), more than tenfold.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China stood at +3.4%.

In value terms, China ($111M) constituted the largest supplier of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliance to the United States, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($52M), with a 26% share of total imports.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from China amounted to +3.4%.

Imports by Type

Iron or steel gas domestic cooking appliances and plate warmers (992K units), cooking appliances and plate warmers; for solid fuel and fuels other than gas or liquid, of iron or steel (729K units) and cooking appliances and plate warmers; for liquid fuel, of iron or steel (224K units) were the main products of imports of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances to the United States.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by cooking appliances and plate warmers; for liquid fuel, of iron or steel (with a CAGR of +12.3%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, iron or steel gas domestic cooking appliances and plate warmers ($158M) constituted the largest type of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliance supplied to the United States, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by cooking appliances and plate warmers; for solid fuel and fuels other than gas or liquid, of iron or steel ($40M), with a 20% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In September 2023, the domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliance price amounted to $103 per unit (CIF, US), rising by 15% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 an increase of 34% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $131 per unit in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($583 per unit), while the price for China ($65.4 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
