U.S. Economic Growth Driven by Global Investment and Manufacturing Incentives
The recent report from the Council of Economic Advisers showcases the continued expansion of the U.S. economy, attributing its success to post-COVID recovery and strong attraction as a global investment haven. The report, reviewed by Andrea Shalal, highlights manufacturing incentives that fueled a surge in foreign direct investment (FDI) as the Biden administration emphasizes infrastructure, clean energy, and semiconductor technology investments.
According to data compiled from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and corroborated by the IndexBox platform, the U.S. saw remarkable dominance in global financial flows. Impressively, the U.S. accounted for 41% of global gross capital inflows in 2022-23, up from its pre-pandemic share of 23%, at a time when global flows were reduced to $4.2 trillion, representing 4.4% of world GDP, a decrease from 5.8% pre-pandemic.
Furthermore, the U.S. dollar retains its primacy as the world's leading reserve currency, crucial in international trade and cross-border transactions. Despite de-dollarization concerns amid financial sanctions, demand for the U.S. dollar has been underpinned by the robust U.S. Treasury market. The dollar appreciated by 7.4% in nominal terms since 2022, underscoring its global significance.
Foreign business investments, a crucial part of the U.S. economic landscape, saw diversification, with South Korea leading FDI into the U.S., contributing $21.5 billion through company ownership and new ventures. These shifts are attributed to the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS and Science Act, which foster environments favorable to renewable energy and technology enhancement.
Despite a peak $2 trillion capital inflow in 2007, the 2023 investment figures remain significant. With record portfolio investments in equity and debt hitting $1.23 trillion, the U.S. continues robust economic engagement, benefiting from allies such as Britain, Canada, France, Luxembourg, and Singapore, which topped U.S. capital inflows.
Overall FDI in the U.S. increased to $5.4 trillion in 2023, doubling over a 16-year period, while U.S. investments overseas reached $6.7 trillion by 2024, illustrating reciprocal foreign investment dynamics. However, concerns remain regarding outbound and inbound investments with China, diminishing by 23% from 2017 to 2023, due to increased scrutiny over national security risks.
