U.S. Energy Firms Increase Oil and Gas Rigs for Second Consecutive Week

In a significant development for the U.S. energy sector, firms have added more oil and natural gas rigs for the second consecutive week, marking the first such increase since July 2024. Reuters reports that as per Baker Hughes, the total rig count rose by four to 586 for the week ending February 7.

This uptick in rig numbers represents a positive shift, although the current rig count remains 6% lower than the same period last year. Specifically, oil rigs increased by one to reach a total of 480, while natural gas rigs went up by two, totaling 100 for the week.

Despite this increase, industry experts forecast a slowdown in oil output growth from the U.S. Permian Basin. According to data from IndexBox, the decline in rig numbers over the last two years was primarily driven by falling oil and gas prices, encouraging energy firms to prioritize debt reduction and shareholder returns over expanding drilling operations. This trend has previously contributed to a 5% decline in rig counts in 2024 and a more substantial 20% fall in 2023.

Moreover, while U.S. is currently the world's leading oil producer, with an output of around 13.2 million barrels per day in 2024, the pace of production growth has been stagnating, with only a 280,000 barrels per day increase last year. Going forward, three of the 25 independent exploration and production companies tracked by TD Cowen announced plans to reduce spending by approximately 6% in 2025 compared to 2024 levels, after three years of varied spending trends.
