U.S. Explosive Exports
In February 2023, shipments abroad of explosives was finally on the rise to reach 2.3K tons for the first time since September 2022, thus ending a four-month declining trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when exports increased by 54% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 4.2K tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to February 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, explosive exports reduced to $31M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, total exports indicated a modest expansion from February 2022 to February 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, exports decreased by -36.0% against December 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when exports increased by 56% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 49K tons in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to February 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Canada (1.7K tons) was the main destination for explosive exports from the United States, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, explosive exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (177 tons), ninefold. Mexico (103 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.5% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Canada stood at +1.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: South Korea (+0.2% per month) and Mexico (+0.9% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($11M) remains the key foreign market for explosive exports from the United States, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($5.3M), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 6.7% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to Canada totaled +1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+2.3% per month) and France (+3.7% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In February 2023, the explosive price amounted to $13.7 per kg (FOB, US), declining by -35.1% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 36% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $21.1 per kg in January 2023, and then dropped dramatically in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($51.4 per kg), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($5.6 per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
